- First Year Engagement
Engineering Student Success Resources
To help engineering students succeed at Penn State, the College of Engineering has offices equipped to support students in their personal, professional, and academic pursuits. Through first-year seminars, students will be introduced to each of these resources and encouraged to add them to their network of support throughout their Penn State journey. A summary of free resources that students can connect with is listed below:
Career Resources & Employer Relations
Students are encouraged to participate in professional work experiences through internships, undergraduate research, and co-ops to gain a stronger understanding of what a future career as an engineer or scientist will entail. From information sessions to resume reviews to career fairs, Career Resources & Employer Relations offers a wide range of career events and resources to support students in their pursuit of professional work experiences.
Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion
CEOI assists all College of Engineering students, faculty, and staff with engagement in equity and inclusion through best practices and programs. CEOI houses programs like the Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP), the Women in Engineering Program (WEP), Student Research, Student Transitions, and the Impact Scholars program. CEOI also supports the Academic Excellence Center (AEC) which provides free tutoring in all entrance-to-major courses. Their support system of faculty and staff encourages students to become engineering allies and leaders in advancing equity and inclusion.
An academic advisor is your designated source for information about scheduling, degree requirements, and entrance-to-major, but they are much more than that. If you are ever in a situation where you don’t know where to turn, your advisor will be able to quickly connect you with a University resource to support. You should aim to meet with an adviser at least once per semester as they can help you make big decisions when it comes to your major, study abroad options, internships, and so much more!
Throughout your college career, the Engineering Library will help you effectively find and access helpful resources. Required textbooks for all courses, as well as a collection of handbooks and directories, are available at the Engineering Library space in the ECoRE Building. Many other resources, including standards, technical reports, and research articles are accessible through the online collections. You can use the Subject Guides to locate these resources, or you can reach out to a librarian for help!
To help students make informed major-selection decisions, the College of Engineering hosts various activities and events to provide pre-major students with more information about their academic degree options. These events happen each Fall and Spring semester and are encouraged for all first year students to attend as they are a great way to meet faculty and upper-level students as you explore your degree options.
Engineering Student Organizations
Joining an engineering student organization is a great way to meet new friends and learn about what your future would look like as an engineer or scientist! You can explore leadership opportunities, network with employers, participate in student competitions and attend professional conferences through your involvement!
The College of Engineering administers endowed and corporate scholarships for engineering undergraduate students based on criteria including major, interest, merit, engagement, and financial need.
There are many ways to experience global travel at Penn State for a semester, month, or week-long duration. These opportunities are possible through global partnerships offering for-credit academic study abroad, internships and research abroad, and service-learning engagement. Global Engineering Engagement is your resource to build cultural awareness through a once in a lifetime educational opportunity!
